How HDMI works


HDMI technology makes use of a protocol called Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS). In the case of HDMI, three TMDS channels are used for the transmission of audio and video information. The devices that initiate the transmission are called “Sources.” On the other hand, the devices that receive the transmission signal are called “Links.”

 

TMDS technology plays an extremely important role in HDMI transmission because even if the signal is digital, it does not mean that it is free from glitches and interference. With TMDS channels, data transmission can be done in an encrypted manner, making it protected. This is possible because the TMDS channel uses a cancellation scheme. In it, the signal is doubled; however, the second signal is inverted. The receiving device receives both signals and compares them. The differences found in this comparison make it possible to identify undue alterations, that is, transmission noises, and rule them out.
